  • About this Gemstone

    Blue Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline quartz meaning its atoms are so tightly bound together that it creates a translucent to opaque quartz called chalcedony. Chalcedony's grow in botryoidal structures like stalactites, (think malachite type concentric circles and bands of colors).

     

    Origins of this cool blue gemstone's name was derived from the ancient Greek maritime city of Chalcedon now located in present day Turkey. It is not written why this gemstone was given the name Chalcedony since it is not mined in the region, but perhaps the people associated the gemstone's color to the beautiful blue Sea of Marmara.

     

    Chalcedony is found mainly in Brazil and has a Mohs scale hardness of 6 making it suitable for jewelry use. This beautiful slightly violetish-blue periwinkle blue color is a very coveted color in the chalcedony family and a natural color as well.

     

    Blue chalcedony is a calming gemstone and a stone of peace and peace-making.
